In my 15+ years of sewing, my ambitions started high (i.e. making a gown with very cheap fabric), steeply dropped (i.e. making many, many tube skirts), and tapered off at easy-medium level projects. I’ve made my fair share of jersey swing dresses, tee shirt dresses, a couple of peplum hem shirts, and generally anything with a forgiving fabric and silhouette. In the last year I have come to appreciate good lounge wear. White tees and jogger pants have been my favorite go-to items when I want to be cozy at home. Having non-ratty tee shirts and PJ shorts that aren’t from middle school actually does keep me motivated even after I’ve come home after a long day of work to get some chores done or cook a decent meal. This project goes way back into the beginning of Fall 2017 when I first set my eyes on the Leith Ruched Body-con Tank Dress on Instagram on possibly ever fashion blogger ever. So flattering and so versatile, I couldn’t believe the number of outfit opportunities I saw for it. When it comes to the holidays, the uniform involves jeans, black leggings, and all of the warmest sweaters I own. This is fine for movie watching and cooking baking, but when I want to dress up a little and also not freeze my bum off, there aren’t really that many great options. I wanted to make something a little more fun and festive to bring home with me to Chicago, so I dug up some leftover stretch velvet I had from a project last Winter and got to drafting a pattern!
