Though beach cover ups are completely unnecessary since clothing or a large towel also suffice for covering your body on your way to the beach, they can be a lot of fun. It’s nice to have something that can be thrown on and taken off simply, while lightly covering you up from the sun just in case you need some shade during the day. Kimono’s were all over the place last year, and it seems that we haven’t seen the last of them yet. I had plans to travel with my family to a resort in Arizona this year for Spring break, so I decided I needed this poolside staple in my suitcase! I recently went on an amazing spring break trip to Arizona with my family. We somehow seemed to cover so much ground while still getting in some quality relaxing time. The highlights included visiting Taliesin, a Frank Lloyd Wright home and studio, barbecuing with family, traveling to Sedona to see the gorgeous scenery, hiking at the Grand Canyon, attending a Cubs training game, and just relaxing by the pool with my family!
But I digress, this is a packing post.
You may wonder how many of the pieces I make on my blog I actually wear frequently. The answer is, most of them all the time! Since I am making my own clothing, I am able to make it exactly the way I want it and to fit comfortably. This makes my homemade DIY pieces some of my favorite ones! Not to mention, it takes quite a bit of time to make each piece, so I have a deep sense of requirement to wear them every once in a while.
I packed quite a few of my DIY pieces for my trip to Arizona, so I thought I would share them with you and how I styled them to work with my travels.
I sported this DIY off-the-shoulder seersucker dress to the Cubs game with my red Longchamp bag since it was the perfect pairing of red and blue to root on my hometown team! The bag was perfect for carrying my camera and other items, while the dress and the Lucky Brand hat (similar) provided a breezy cover from the sun. The sandals are by Steve Madden (similar).
For casual strolls around the resort I styled my DIY seersucker peplum top with American Eagle jean shorts (similar) and comfy Birkenstock sandals. I also brought along my trusty Rebecca Minkoff bag (similar) with DIY tassel charm for a bit of fun, and to carry my wallet so I could pick up souvenirs along the way!
The most versatile piece I brought with me was this DIY black maxi skirt that was great in the cool mornings when we would go get coffee on the patio. Paired with my striped Gap sweater (similar), this also made a great travel outfit for sleeping on the plane. The sunglasses are from Nordstrom.
If you follow fashion, you’ve seen this Rebecca Minkoff bag. It’s been all over spring fashion week in many venues, just being happy and fun and gorgeous. What makes this bag so unique is that it’s adorned in colorful, leather tassels! Like me, you may recognize that you already own way too many purses to really justify buying another one, especially when that purse is over $200 and definitely too trendy to wear over many years to come. For my sewing tutorials I try to spend time explaining in depth how to create each project, not leaving out any details. But sometimes I wonder, when I simply write, “Hem the bottom of the shirt”, are there people out there who have no idea what I’m talking about? How would someone hem a shirt? In that case, I’ve failed y’all! Continue reading “It’s Sew Easy: How to Hem a Shirt (or anything) Sewing Tutorial”→
Blush, the newest color of the season, has me all kinds of excited. Flattering on all sorts of skin tones, it’s no wonder everyone has been sporting it in coats, accessories, and dresses. Pink is also the perfect color for a Valentine’s Day getup, and it’s only a week away! Though Kyle and I aren’t huge Valentine’s Day enthusiasts, usually spending the day together just cooking and hanging out to avoid the craziness of restaurants, I’m open to the commitment of wearing pink. This post should not be coming as any surprise, seeing as I told you I was totally gung ho about redecorating my new sofa with none other than fur pillows. They are all over the place in the stores, and I think that they give a really nice contrast in texture to a modern space. I shopped around and found some beautiful ones at Target, Pottery Barn, and Overstock, but none of them had removable pillow cases! There’s no way that furry pillow is not going to need a wash every once in a while… Continue reading “DIY Fur Pillow Cases”→
A new year, a new set of decor! Well, sort of. I don’t have the funds to totally redo my entire apartment, so I am going to focus on small accent changes that will really give my place a new look. I did this a little last year too at the start of the year, and coming home to my apartment after two weeks in Chicago inspired me to brighten up the place again. Check out my list below, and get excited for some DIY’s!
#1. My new couch is coming TODAY! I will not recommend this store, since I had the worst time getting this couch on time (AKA it was quite late…and still isn’t technically here…), but I am really in love with the mid century modern style and quality… I suggest ordering online as the people there are much more helpful than in store.

#2. With a new couch comes loads more pillows. Though I love color, I have found that most everything I have purchased over the years has been in color, and it’s getting a little overwhelming. I am going to work on adding more black and white to the couch, and definitely some fur for texture!

#3. Is it wrong if I want paint all of my picture frames gold? And pretty much every other object I see? Seeing as gold is incredibly trendy and paint is cheap, I see a lot of gold DIY’s coming in the future. Also, I made this DIY art almost two years ago, but I think it’s time to add something new into the mix. I’m looking at creating some sort of art wall, potentially a stag head or some sort of gold leaf quote.

#4. I am going to commit to some succulents. I’ve wanted to buy them for so long but have been afraid I will kill them… but even if I do, they are only $3 and then hopefully I will learn how to keep them alive in the future? Hope and dreams of a non-gardener.
